Water-powered sawmill in Izvoare

In the last centuries in Zetea village there were many water-powered sawmills. Their existance was due to the many forests and fast running mountain streams having large deliveries. During the centuries most of them became ruined or were replaced with modern, electric devices.

The sawmill is situated in the eastern part of Izvoare, its water-powered part can be visited only after previous bookings.

About the sawmill

Structure

The water-powered sawmill is a simple timbering structure, building, it is like a covered shed and its eastern part is closed by a board. The sawmill is situated in the eastern part of Izvoare (at the race of the former mill) at a distance of 6 m from the stream. (In order to use water power people created a canal from the Forrás stream – existing even today – and this canal has gradually become a branch of the stream). The height of the building is P and its surface is=43,05 m². On the ground floor there is the wood cutting machine and under the ground floor there is the whole complex mechanism of the sawmill made of wood and iron.

Functioning and technology

The height of the building is P and its surface is=43,05 m². On the ground floor there is the wood cutting machine and under the ground floor there is the whole complex mechanism of the sawmill made of wood and iron. On the western part there is the wood loading ramp which is made of obliquely placed stumps. As far as the functioning of the sawmill is regarded we can tell that it transforms concentric rotation into vertical linear motion, this way it puts the blade in motion and a complementary mechanism moves the bole according to the degree of the sawing or cutting.

Structure

The foundation of the sawmill consists of oak columns with a wooden structure, in a square (tightening of the wooden columns and beams using buttresses), at one side it is closed with boards. The boarding of the ground floor was built using diagonally placed beams, the floor was made of boards. The roof is supported by a symmetrically sloping wooden structure which is covered by dark grey boards.

Water supply

Water supply takes place in an alternative way without having any impacts on the stream bed or on its present course. At a distance of about 100 m from the building the water is collected in a canal far from the bank and through an underground 50-m-long conduit it is led into a second canal and from this canal water is led to the wheel of the sawmill through an underground wood-covered canal. Water falls on the wheel, the wheel starts to move and the water flows into the stream (into a secondary branch, into the former millrace). The water-collecting canal is equipped with a waterstop structure which helps to control water supply.
